Last night we called to an old lady who just had her boiler serviced by a company who specialize in Groupon and Low price boiler service . Her daughter bought the deal for €39 and before the service engineer left , he had managed to extract another €150 for replacing a faulty electrical switch (€3) and a CO2 alarm (€25). The cheep €39 boiler service actually cost a total of €189. The reason we were called , was to cost up replacing the boiler as the engineer had told the old lady that her boiler needed to be replaced and this would cost an additional €2000. On review of the boiler nothing wrong was found and we estimate there was between 5 and 10 year of life left in it before it should be replaced.
This is a very common story we experience with unscrupulous engineers . Just because they can issue an RGI cert doesn’t mean they are telling to you the truth, !!! At €39 they are servicing your boiler at a loss ( 50% of the fee goes to Groupon, and the cert cost €6) So they have to extract money from you to make it worth their while to turn up and they do this by fear!!!!
